Can I be a sperm donor?

The Sperm donation process involves several steps:

  1. The person donating sperm must be an Indian Resident
  2. If you are a healthy man between 23 and 45 years of age, you may be suitable to be a sperm donor
  3. If the person donating sperm has a partner, they are also required to attend counselling sessions along with the potential donor.

You may already have children of your own and want to help others experience parenthood. Or you may not be ready to have a family of your own but want to make someone else’s dreams come true. You can also donate sperm to a relative or friend who is trying to conceive. In this situation, we may consider donors over 45 years of age.

Why do we need more sperm donors?

Infertility affects an estimated one in six couples. Many couples can be treated using conventional in vitro fertilization (IVF), but donor sperm may be required in some cases of severe male infertility where there is a failure of sperm production or where there is a serious medical or genetic condition.

Who can use donated sperm?

Treatment with donor sperm may be required to help you achieve your dream of having a baby if you are a:

  1. Woman in a same sex and gender diverse couple,
  2. Single woman, or Heterosexual couple with severe male factor infertility (usually total absence of sperm production) or a history of serious genetic or medical disorder

Treatment options using donor sperm

Treatment with donor sperm may be by intrauterine insemination (IUI) or IVF with Intra cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI). The recommended treatment will depend on your circumstances, the quality and amount of sperm available for use, and any previous treatments. The IUI procedure involves insertion of sperm through the cervix at the time of the woman’s ovulation. When using donor sperm, the frozen sperm sample will be thawed just prior to the IUI procedure. IVF using donor sperm is recommended if IUI treatment has not resulted in pregnancy, where the sperm quality is inadequate for IUI, where there is only a small amount of suitable sperm stored, or otherwise where medically indicated. All IVF cycles using clinic-recruited donor sperm involve the use of IVF with Intra cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)
